Tope Ajayi
Tope Ajayi (b, Babatope Ajayi, 1999. Ibadan, Nigeria)(“Tope”) is a multi-faceted artist whose works cut across various media and mediums. His practice combines both visual and audio-visual approaches to create unique experiences with different aesthetics.
Tope is a natural born creative. His parents and teachers noticed his talents at an early age, and as such he was enrolled in after school programs for the arts. It was through one of the programs that he met a mentor, a professional artist, who taught him the basics of paintings and drawing.
Currently, Tope is a student at the University of Ibadan, with a focus on Theater Arts. Prior to his enrollment, he took a year and worked to gather tuition. Additionally, he used the time to explore his interest in time-based art. He is fusing traditional art, digital art, photography, film, performance art, and animation together. His art reflects the themes of the black experience, afro-futurism and afro-surrealism with larger subjects as the universe and our place within it. His work process is deeply spiritual, sometimes, experimental. But, very practical. ‘Tope believes that when people can find themselves and their place in his art, then it has served its purpose.
