This year, our lead off for the series is our New Jersey based super star Maeva Fouche. Maeva is a rising star in the art world. She’s poised to make some serious waves soon.
Describe Your Path to becoming an artist.
Ten years ago when I picked up a paintbrush, I didn’t think at that time it would be one of the best decisions I would ever make. I started out with little to no knowledge about art. This journey I’ve been on has been full of enlightenment, progression, self-awareness and fulfillment. I’ve cried, been frustrated, excited, nervous, and even doubtful. With all of that I’ve learned to harness those feelings and translate it into my work. So I would say being an artist has been very therapeutic for me. It has opened doors, and placed the right people and circumstance in my life.
What is the most rewarding part of being an artist?
Musicians, writers, dancers and artist create to evoke a feeling within you. When I create a piece my intentions are always to get the viewer emotionally, spiritually and mentally connected to my work. It’s an indescribable feeling when you know you’ve changed someone’s thoughts and emotions, even if it’s just for a moment. A legacy outlives your life, and to know that my work will outlive me and continue to inspire and change people’s lives is truly rewarding.
What has been the biggest challenge you've faced working as an artist?
Being an artist means to that you invite the world to view and criticize the most vulnerable part of yourself. As I previously said, I put my emotions into my work, and you never know how people will respond. It can be a challenge growing as an artist and allowing people to bare witness to your transformation.
What or who is inspiring you at the moment?
I am currently inspired by Barry McGee and his work. I’ve also found inspiration from my every day interactions with people in my life. It could be as simple as something they say or even what they wear on a particular day. I believe that the universe can communicates with us in many different ways, and so I try to stay aware of my surroundings, just so I can be receptive.
What can we expect to see from you in the coming weeks and months?
I’ve been working on a new body of work. By the summer I plan on having a one woman show, and revealing my pieces. I’m currently preparing myself for a few gallery shows as well. I’ll post additional information on my social media pages as the time nears, so follow me and take a look.
